2. How does it fit with Compass’ core beliefs of equality, solidarity, democracy, freedom, sustainability and well being?
We currently live in a “rat race” where accommodation costs are stupid and most people are “wage slaves”. This is not fair, it isolates people, people’s needs are not getting met, many people have little freedom, it’s not sustainable and it’s not condusive to well-being.
3. How does it build the institutions of social democracy, like social groups and collective and cooperative forms of ownership and control?
If there is no pressure on anyone to do anything that they don’t want to it will change the whole dynamic of society. Employers will have to make jobs more attractive and salaries will reflect the desirability of the job. At the moment, to a large extent, the best jobs get the best salaries and this is wrong. People everywhere will spend a lot more time thing about what really needs to be done and doing it. At the moment, Western capitalism does so many things that just don’t need to be done.
4. How much will it cost or raise and where will any cost come from?
Start by allowing anyone to claim Income Support and Housing Benefit. Don’t check up on anyone. Save thousands of pounds getting rid of armies of civil servants and bureaucrats processing forms and checking up on people. It will work if you can get it to work. It’s the transition that’s tricky. How do you get the “go-getters” to focus on what really creates wealth, reward them for doing so and support those who are not ready to work?
5. Which groups in the electorate are likely to support or oppose this measure? Is there any polling evidence you have on this?
Loads of people will not have the imagination or vision to cope with this one. Wealth creators always have a big hang-up about parasites and scrounges. We’ve got to convince them that people who are not ready to work will eventaully get bored of doing nothing and may go on to do wonderful things or wealth creating things. And then there is that matter of support. We must provided a very large number of ladders for people to climb when they have had enough of the easy life (doing nothing).
6. Is there a place or country where it’s worked? Please provide some information.
Has this been tried in Ireland to some degree?
7. What are the three main arguments in favour/against it?
1. No more wage slavery.
2. No more “rat race”.
3. Much better fit between jobs and personalities.
