2. How does it fit with Compass’ core beliefs of equality, solidarity, democracy, freedom, sustainability and well being?
Equality: The land has effectively been stolen from the powerless through enclosure and it is hard to raise food for oneself. Involuntary homelessness is a moral outrage. Much work is immoral as it involves damage to the environment, oppression of fellow human beings or oppression of the employee, but people are forced to take these jobs to fulfil basic needs. People need clothes to survive in this climate.
3. How does it build the institutions of social democracy, like social groups and collective and cooperative forms of ownership and control?
It provides all people with dignity and creates many jobs in construction, agriculture and the clothing industry.
4. How much will it cost or raise and where will any cost come from?
The food could be provided for relatively little - see my related ideas. Housing is also widely available. Clothing would be more expensive but could be redistributed by the state through clothing banks to some extent.
5. Which groups in the electorate are likely to support or oppose this measure? Is there any polling evidence you have on this?
Support: Poor people generally. Oppose: The food and farming lobby.
6. Is there a place or country where it’s worked? Please provide some information.
Scandinavia and possibly Brazil have somewhat similar policies.
7. What are the three main arguments in favour/against it?
Saves people´s lives.
Freedom from fear and want.
Provides work.
