Create a state alcohol monopoly

“All alcohol sales should be made by the government.”

2. How does it fit with Compass’ core beliefs of equality, solidarity, democracy, freedom, sustainability and well being?

Wellbeing: Counteracts alcoholism and the social problems related to alcohol consumption by taking away the profit motive for selling intoxicating beverages.

3. How does it build the institutions of social democracy, like social groups and collective and cooperative forms of ownership and control?

People would be healthier and less under the threat of violence and accidental death resulting from alcohol abuse. Child abuse and domestic violence would decline.

4. How much will it cost or raise and where will any cost come from?

It would cost nothing but be a source of revenue for the government.

5. Which groups in the electorate are likely to support or oppose this measure? Is there any polling evidence you have on this?

Support: Health groups, children´s charities, women’s refuges, health and safety groups, Muslims and other religious groups which oppose the consumption of alcohol.

6. Is there a place or country where it’s worked? Please provide some information.

It´s been common in Scandinavia, has been tried in Canada and was also practiced in the North West of England over much of the last century. It was successful in all these places.

7. What are the three main arguments in favour/against it?

Improves health.
Reduces violence.
Saves poor people money.
