2. How does it fit with Compass’ core beliefs of equality, solidarity, democracy, freedom, sustainability and well being?
Abolishing poverty should fit in with Compass core beliefs
3. How does it build the institutions of social democracy, like social groups and collective and cooperative forms of ownership and control?
Abolishing poverty would be a collective demonstration of a belief in social democracy
4. How much will it cost or raise and where will any cost come from?
The cost of abolishing poverty in crude financial terms will be met by reduction in costs of administration of means tested benefits and a removal of the ceiling on National Insurance contributions which lets rich people get away with not paying their fair share.
5. Which groups in the electorate are likely to support or oppose this measure? Is there any polling evidence you have on this?
Working people, the unemployed and pensioners should all benefit from the proposal and would hopefully support it. Rich people will oppose it even tho it will benefit them in the long run by enabling them to live in a better world.
6. Is there a place or country where it’s worked? Please provide some information.
Abolishing poverty has been the aspiration of progressive social movements thro history and around the world but has always been subverted by the rich and powerfull
7. What are the three main arguments in favour/against it?
Improved social justice
Improved health of individuals and society
Improved economic stability

The main objection to a set minimum wage has not been addressed. The problem is that by setting the minimum many employers who cannot manage to pay even this wage, will go out of business and this will cause more unemployment.

Where are the arguements against it? , see comment 1 above.

The right way to abolish poverty is to provide greater opportunities to work by freeing more land and not allowing its speculation to hold up employment. This could be achieved by legislation to tax land values, thereby causing the monopolists and speculators in unused land to to make better use of it or sell it to somebody who can.

David, I think you are quite wrong with regard the the minimum wage. It is in every business’s individual interest to pay their workers as little as possible but for other businesses to pay their workers good wages so they can purchase the goods and services which they provide. This is the capitalist conundrum. The minimum wage is good for everyone. The UK minimum wage has been a great success, pulling millions of workers out of poverty.
Unearned income from land is not the only problem - unearned income by the owners of capital is another. Capital is created from labour and land - so only workers are entitled to the rewards.

The setting of a minimum wage means that all those who are employed at lower rates will either be sacked or have their wages raised.
It is my impression that the former action is more likely than the latter, with a lot of small and struggling entepreuneers going out of business once the minimum wage is introduced. If we are to consider the wider range of labourers and not simply thopse whose organisation is through activity by trade unions, then surely it is clear that by setting the minimum wage there will be a protected group of labourers whose protection is causing poverty amongst those who cannot earn sufficient to fall within the above minimum category. Thus natural economics without a minimum being set is the best, even if it results in one smaller part of society to get reduced wages.
